SANTO DOMINGO. - The Center for the Fight Against Blindness Dr. Zato and the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) have signed a cooperation and collaboration agreement to train medical personnel at the national and international level in continuing education in the field of ophthalmology.
The agreement was signed by Architect Miguel Fiallo Calderón, rector of UNPHU, and Dr. Herbert Stern Díaz, academic coordinator of the Visual Sciences Institute Foundation (INCIVI), the entity that sponsors the Center for the Fight Against Blindness Dr. Zato in collaboration with the Puntacana Group Foundation. They explained that the objective of the agreement is to rotate teaching staff, undergraduate and graduate students from UNPHU who are trained in ophthalmology, with a special focus on neuro-ophthalmology.
Similarly, the agreement establishes scientific-academic exchanges for both UNPHU faculty and students and INCIVI personnel, in order to develop conferences, courses, work sessions, and continuing education programs on areas and topics related to ophthalmology, as well as the exchange of scientific-academic materials or documents.
For the training, the Puntacana Group Foundation and INCIVI organized the Introduction to Ophthalmology Course, driven by the interest in mitigating the high number of medical graduates with limited knowledge in ophthalmology who enter hospitals as a requirement for medical specializations.
Since 2020, the Center for the Fight Against Blindness Dr. Zato has provided care to over 3,000 patients in the eastern region. Additionally, with a mission to strengthen preventive medicine, they promote a blindness prevention campaign in childhood through mobile units in public schools in the region, impacting over 900 children to date.
